Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro handed over copies of the sword of the national hero of the country of Simon Bolivar, the Venezuelan officials and the military, against whom the US government imposed sanctions. The ceremony is broadcasted in the TV channel Venezolana de Televisión.
Maduro called the gift “an expression of moral support” to those who “suffered from the attacks of the U.S. government.”
“Blatant U.S. government tried to punish them for their loyalty to the Bolivarian revolution,” said Maduro, adding that these sanctions are “illegal and outrageous”.
Earlier, the US government announced sanctions against 13 high-ranking military and officials of Venezuela. According to the representative of the American administration, Washington, D.C., may consider wider economic measures in case of elections to the Constitutional Assembly (CA) of Venezuela.
The decision of the President about convocation of this body, and without prior referendum drew criticism from the Prosecutor General’s office and the opposition, which controls Parliament, and led to the aggravation of the situation in Venezuela. Elections to the CA, which can reform the public administration system and change the basic law, scheduled for July 30.
