A member of the Federation Council Frants Klintsevich admits that Russia may support USA’s intention to legitimize its presence in Syria, if Washington requested to Damascus. Senator leads Saturday, July 22, “Interfax”.
“Today, the United States has absolutely not insist on withdrawal of Bashar al-Assad [President of the Arab Republic] as a pre-condition for a peaceful settlement in Syria. Why not take the next step, legimitation its presence in this country?” — said Klintsevich, first Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council Committee on defense and security.
He continued: “I do Not exclude that Russia could support the statement of the United States to the authorities of Syria, if it is, of course, will follow.”
According to the MP, in this scenario, the Syrian government forces are entitled to expect, at least, a neutral attitude on the part of the us military, preventing any clashes, including air strikes.
“It is also clear that legal recognition of the status of the U.S. presence in Syria will create fundamentally new conditions for cooperation between Russia and the United States in the region in the fight against international terrorism,” — said Klintsevich, commenting on the statement by us General Raymond Thomas.
On Friday, July 21, commander of special operations of the United States said, “the day is Near when the Russians will say: “Why are you still in Syria, the United States?” (…). If the Russians will play this card, then when we want to stay, can’t do that.”
The international coalition headed by the USA is fighting terrorists in Syria without permission of Damascus.
