The state Duma in the second reading has tightened the punishment for abetment of suicide

The Russian state Duma adopted in the second reading a bill toughening criminal liability for incitement to suicide, the maximum penalty provided in the document, — 15 years imprisonment.

The document was submitted Monday with Chairman of the faction “United Russia” Vladimir Vasilyev, head of the security Committee by Vasily Piskareva and his first Deputy Ernest Valeev.

Abetment of suicide (article 110.1 of the criminal code) the applicable law shall be punishable by deprivation of liberty for a term up to six years, incitement to suicide (article 110 of the criminal code) — from five to eight years.

The encouragement of suicide or assistance to suicide shall be punishable by deprivation of liberty for a term from 5 to 10 years (under current law imprisonment is expected for up to 5 years).

The project also establishes an increased responsibility — from eight to 15 years of imprisonment for the inducement and assistance to commit suicide, entailed death of two or more minors, or knowingly helpless or dependent of the perpetrator, or a pregnant woman.

The organization of activities aimed at encouraging them to commit suicide through the dissemination of information about methods of committing suicide will be punished with imprisonment for a term of 5 to 10 years (now with imprisonment for the term up to 4 years). The same act, coupled with public speaking, use of publicly performed works, the media (including Internet), shall be punishable by deprivation of liberty for a term from 5 to 15 years (the current legislation envisages imprisonment for up to 6 years).
