Russian President Vladimir Putin went to the head of the Moscow Helsinki group Lyudmila Alexeyeva on the Old Arbat, to personally congratulate her on her 90th birthday. It is reported by TASS on Thursday, July 20.

On the website of the Kremlin published a congratulatory telegram sent by President Alexeyeva. It noted that it had made “a significant contribution to strengthening institutions of democracy and civil society” in Russia “thanks to a special moral strength and loyalty to his convictions.”

In an interview with Alekseeva has told that will celebrate the birthday in a circle of family and friends. In a solemn session of the Council under President of Russia on development of civil society and human rights, which will be held in honor of her anniversary, she will participate via video link. Lyudmila Alekseeva is one of its founders. The Moscow Helsinki group, established in 1976, is the oldest Russian organization for the protection of human rights.
