Satellite images show that the gap between the iceberg, which area of 6,000 square kilometers, and the glacier shelf, Larsen C, from which it broke away, increases. Photographs of Antarctica at this time of year is difficult to obtain because of clouds.
Iceberg, the area of which is comparable with the two territories of Moscow, while behaves exactly as was predicted. According to recent studies, there are four ways in which the iceberg depending on their places of origin.
Hypothetically, the iceberg needs to move along the slope of continental shallows, pushed by the winds in the Weddell sea. However, due to the Coriolis force block of ice, in contrast, continues to be close to the edge of the continent.
Probably the A-68 will move along the East coast of the Antarctic Peninsula to the Atlantic ocean, where a large iceberg can present a danger to navigation.
Next, A-68 may sail North-East towards the sub-Antarctic island of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands.
Satellite image of Deimos obtained on 14 July, shows that a large chunk of coastal ice broke away freely, as it was much thinner than the rest of the standing ice, and makes up 10% of the total area of the glacier Larsen S.
Scientists believe that the formation of iceberg A-68 will help to understand how the destruction of the glacier will affect the shelf. There are many cracks that are to the North of the point of schism, and which for a long time not been extended. Theoretically, the formation of an iceberg can affect their condition.
