The UN security Council has extended for one year mission in Iraq

UN, July 15. /TASS/. The UN Security Council has extended for one year until July 31, 2018 — term Mission for assistance to Iraq (UNAMI). The corresponding resolution was unanimously adopted at the security Council meeting on Friday evening.

The document pays great attention to the presence in Iraq of the terrorist group “Islamic state” (IG banned in Russia — approx. TASS), which “poses a serious threat to the future” of the country.

The UN security Council stressed that “the only way to counter this threat is to work with all Iraqis on issues of security, as well as in the political sphere.” A long-term solution to instability, says the resolution, “will require from the political leadership of Iraq to make decisions that will unite the country”.

The mission of the United Nations to assist Iraq was established by Security Council on 14 August 2003 — four months after the overthrow of Saddam Hussein as a result of military operations by the US and the UK. On 19 August the UN office in Baghdad explosion, which killed 22 staff members of the mission, including its head. Soon after UNAMI had been evacuated to Jordan and returned to Baghdad in a truncated format in August 2004. Adopted Friday resolution, the security Council members urged the Iraqi authorities to continue to ensure the safety of the mission and provide it with logistical support.

The range of tasks of UNAMI, is providing Advisory support to the authorities, as well as assisting the people and government of Iraq in strengthening democratic institutions and promoting political dialogue, providing assistance to refugees and internally displaced persons, promote the protection of human rights. In addition, the mission coordinates the efforts of various agencies, funds and programmes of the UN in the country, including assisting residents of the city of Mosul, in an area which in recent months has conducted large-scale military campaign against the militants.
