The Ministry of defence of Georgia is planning to buy weapons from the United States instead of Soviet small arms, in particular the M4 rifle and M240 machine guns. It is reported portal Interpressnews, citing the country’s defense Ministry.
According to the defense Ministry, arms purchases will be made at the expense of the annually allocated Georgia the financial help from the United States aimed at developing the country’s defense.
In may, the Pentagon chief James Mattis to appeal to the Minister of defence of Georgia Levan Izoria said that the U.S. is ready to help reform the Georgian army, and to bring it to Western standards. “The Pentagon is ready to assist Georgia in the implementation of the ambitious military reform. It is important that you chose this course,” said Mattis.
He appreciated the contribution of the Georgian army in global security, noting the presence of Georgian troops in Afghanistan. According to Mattis, Georgia is a strategic partner of the United States.
