The Russian painter Ilya Glazunov died on 88 year of life, informs “RIA Novosti” with reference to his acquaintances. This information was confirmed TASS wife of the artist Inessa Orlova. The artist’s daughter Vera Glazunova told “Interfax” that the cause of his death was heart failure. According to preliminary information, the funeral of Ilya Glazunov will be held at the Cathedral of Christ the Savior.

The first exhibition of the painter was held in early February 1957 at the Central House of art workers in Moscow. C 1978 Ilya Glazunov taught at the Moscow art Institute named after V. I. Surikov.

In 1981, the artist has organized and headed the all-Union Museum of decorative-applied and folk art in Moscow. Since 1987, Mr. Glazunov was the rector of the Russian Academy of painting, sculpture and architecture.

The artist has created dozens of works, among which, in particular, a series of paintings on the themes of the major works of Fyodor Dostoyevsky (triptych “Legend of the Grand Inquisitor”), panel “the contribution of the peoples of the Soviet Union to world culture and civilization” (1980).

Also painted a series of portraits of Soviet and foreign political and public figures and people of art — Indian politics Indira Gandhi, the Italian film Director Federico Fellini, Italian actress Gina Lollobrigida, the Russian actor Innokenty Smoktunovsky, Opera singer Elena Obraztsova, cosmonaut Vitaly Sevastyanov, Leonid Brezhnev.

In addition, Ilya Glazunov has created artwork for productions of several operas (“the legend of the invisible city of Kitezh and the maiden Fevronia” by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov in Bolshoi theatre “Prince Igor” by Alexander Borodin and “the Queen of spades” by Pyotr Tchaikovsky at the Berlin Opera) and participated in the restoration and reconstruction of buildings of the Moscow Kremlin, including the Grand Kremlin Palace.

Ilya Glazunov has received the title of people’s artist of the USSR (1980) and the RSFSR (1979). In 2010 for the attention to the outstanding contribution to the development of Russian art of the artist was awarded the Order of St. Andrew Rublev of the first degree. Ilya Glazunov was a full cavalier of the order “For merits before Fatherland”, and was awarded the gold medal of UNESCO for his outstanding contribution to world culture.
