The Federation Council has responded to US plans to punish Russia over INF Treaty

Franz Klintsevich

Information about the US plans to impose sanctions against Russia because of alleged violations of the Treaty on the elimination of intermediate-range and shorter-range nuclear forces (INF) should not be taken seriously, said the first Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council Committee on defense and security Frants Klintsevich. About this he wrote on his page in Facebook on Saturday, July 8.

“Begs comparison of the bill with information noise, released in the global political air only, in order to interrupt the information on results of meeting between leaders of the two countries. It is clear that no evidence of violations by Russia of the Treaty is not given. They simply do not,” wrote the Senator.

He stressed that Russia strictly fulfills all its international obligations. In his opinion, the bill is not passed.

Earlier on Saturday it was reported that the Chairman of the Committee on foreign Affairs U.S. house of representatives ed Royce has introduced in Congress an amendment to the law on national security for 2018. She, in particular, involves the introduction of new sanctions against Russia for breach of Contract on the elimination of intermediate-range and shorter-range.

On 28 June the Deputy head of the Department of foreign Affairs on non-proliferation and arms control (DNCW) Vladimir Leontyev said that Moscow does not rule out a U.S. withdrawal from the Treaty on the elimination of intermediate-range and shorter-range unilaterally.

The INF Treaty does not allow parties to have ballistic missiles, land-based and cruise missiles with a range of from 500 to 5.5 thousand kilometers. The document was signed in 1987.
