The author of the “Blockade book” was 98 years old.

Moscow. July 5. INTERFAX.RU Writer, honorary citizen of St. Petersburg Daniil Granin died at the 99th year of life, reported “Interfax” a source in medical circles of the city. According to the source, Granin last few days were in the intensive care unit of one of the city hospitals. Shortly before his death, he was connected to the ventilator.

“Daniil died in the night of Wednesday,” — said the Agency interlocutor.

Granin (real name Herman) was born on 1 January 1919 in the family of Forester of Alexander Hermann and his wife Anna of Bakirovna. In 1940 he graduated from the Electromechanical faculty of the Leningrad Polytechnic Institute, worked at the Kirov plant. From there he went to the front in the division of the people’s militia, fought on the Luga line, on Pulkovo heights. Then he was sent to the Ulyanovsk tank school, fought in the tank forces, was commander of a company of heavy tanks.

From 1945 to 1950 he worked in “Lenenergo” and the research Institute. Was a member of the editorial Board of the journal “Roman-Gazeta”. Granin became the initiator of creation of the Leningrad society “Mercy”. Granin — President of the society of friends of the Russian national library, Chairman of the Board of the International charitable Fund them. Granin — commander of the order of St. Andrew, Hero of Socialist Labor (1989), Honorary citizen of St. Petersburg (2005), laureate of USSR State prize and the State prize of Russia and prize of the President of the Russian Federation in literature and art prize of the St. Petersburg government in literature, art and architecture, Heine award and others.
