NEW YORK, June 30. /TASS/. The former lead singer of the Beatles, British musician Paul McCartney has failed to reclaim the copyright on a number of compositions written by him in collaboration with another member of the “fab four” John Lennon (1940-1980). As reported on Friday by the news Agency Reuters, the Federal court for the southern district of new York dismissed a lawsuit McCartney.

The judge Edgardo Ramos ruled to reject the lawsuit, but promised at the same time to revisit things later.

The timing of re-examination requirements McCartney is not defined.

We are talking about the songs written in the period from 1962 to 1972, including the hits “Across the Universe” and “I Want to Hold Your Hand”, the rights to which in 1985 purchased Michael Jackson (1958-2009). After his death the heirs sold their singer was in the US music division of Sony — Sony/ATV Music Publishing.

As stated in the lawsuit, in recent years, McCartney has repeatedly been notified by Sony/ATV that he intends to return the rights to the compositions in accordance with the laws of the United States. They allow this procedure after a certain period after the last sale of the rights. The first under this legislation a song from a vast catalog is “Love Me Do”, the rights to which the musician can present in October 2018.

McCartney claimed that Sony/ATV was deliberately trying to slow down talks with him about songs, waiting for the end of a similar trial in the UK, where the rights to his songs championed by the British rock band Duran Duran. In December last year, the team lost the case, as the court decided to follow the English laws which do not allow for the return of intellectual property rights. Thus, the rights to several songs Duran Duran have moved American music company Gloucester Place Music.
