Aleksey Petrenko was born on 26 March 1938 in the village of Chemer, Chernihiv oblast. In 1961 he graduated from the Kharkov theatre Institute. He served in such theatres as the Leningrad Lensovet theatre, the Moscow drama theater on Malaya Bronnaya, Moscow art theatre, “School of modern play”. Since 2010 was the Patriarchal Council for culture.
