The Governor of St. Petersburg Georgy Poltavchenko did not coordinate with Russian President Vladimir Putin’s decision to transfer possession of the Russian Orthodox Church, St. Isaac’s Cathedral, reports “Kommersant”, citing a senior Federal official.
According to him, the surveys conducted among residents suggests that a possible solution to the conflict surrounding the transfer of the Cathedral may be its joint use as a Museum and the Cathedral while maintaining the status of a legal entity.
The refusal of the transfer, in his opinion, would be “too humiliating for the Russian Orthodox Church”, while the implementation of this decision may have negative electoral consequences.
