Five of the Kuril Islands received the names of
YUZHNO-SAKHALINSK, February 11. /Offset. TASS, Iryna Baibarza/. Five unnamed Islands in the Kuril chain are called, the corresponding order was signed by Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev.
“In accordance with the Federal law “On naming of geographical objects” and on the basis of proposals of the Sakhalin regional Duma, as well as to perpetuate the memory of Lieutenant-General Derevyanko K. N., Lieutenant-General Grechko A. R, statesman, diplomat Gromyko A. A., statesman, Governor Farkhutdinov I. P. and captain A. I. Shchetinina to assign names to geographical objects located on the territory of the Sakhalin oblast…”, — stated in the message.
Suggestions about the name of the Islands was prepared by Sakhalin division of Russian geographical society. As reported TASS the Chairman Sergey Ponomarev, suggested a dozen titles, names has the first five. Work on assigned names will continue.
Forgotten names
“Reading the order of the government about the naming of the five Islands, I feel a sense of happiness, satisfaction and restored justice. The names that appeared on the map of Russia, unfortunately, forgotten. We know that was an act of surrender of Japan, and the fact that it was signed by the General Kuzma Derevyanko — don’t remember. The name of the great son of the Russian and Ukrainian peoples, who died from exposure after visiting Hiroshima and Nagasaki, a little — known”, — said Ponomarev.
He said that the island Derevyanko is located near the island Anuchina, to the East of the Country of the rising sun. “It is symbolic that in the North of Hokkaido, the sun rises from the island Derevyanko,” — said Ponomarev.
To give the island a name of Andrey Gromyko of the Ministry of foreign Affairs. It is the largest of the island group of the Tair, is situated 2 km from the Cape Castricum on the island of Urup. “Island Shchetinina — the gift of our sailors. Anna Shchetinina in 27 years became the world’s first female captain. It is in the pre-war years did much to strengthen the defense of our country. Her textbook on navigation is still used,” — said Ponomarev.
According to him, one of the Islands received the name of ex-Governor of the Sakhalin region Igor Farkhutdinov, who died tragically in 2003. Another — the name of Hero of the Soviet Union, General-Lieutenant Alexei Gnecco, who led the preparation and conduct of the landing operation of Soviet troops in the Northern and middle Kuril Islands in August 1945.
The project “Russian island”
Project naming unnamed Kuril Islands began in 2010. “Then we proposed to amend the Charter of the region and to list in it all the largest Islands adjacent to Sakhalin and all the Kurile Islands with names. In December 2010, this fundamental change was introduced — for the first time in the Russian legislation there is a list of the Kuril Islands, which consists of 77 Islands,” — said Ponomarev.
According to him, in 2012 organized the first expedition to the Kuril Islands. Then its members are laid on the two Islands, which are managed to get, capsules assigned names and set the flags of Russia and Sakhalin region. One of the nameless Islands was named after the scientist Sergey Kapitsa, the second commander of the Kuril landing operation during the Second world war Alexei Gnecco. With each island they took a handful of rocky land for the exposition in the regional Museum.
The next expedition took place in 2014, 2015 and 2016. According to their results, proposals for the name has already been sent or will be sent to the Sakhalin regional Duma for consideration.
