European States are not ready to grant Ukraine membership in NATO, as Kiev has repeatedly announced, said Chairman of the Federation Council Committee on defense and security Viktor Ozerov. His words leads RIA Novosti on Monday, July 10.
“This is another blank shot [Ukrainian President Petro] Poroshenko that the goal is not to impress,” said the Senator, commenting on the statement by the head of the neighboring state about the beginning of the discussions on granting to Kiev of the action plan for joining the Alliance.
He recalled that several years ago Georgia had already received such a plan, however, the decision on the country’s accession to NATO “has not moved from a dead point”.
Earlier on Monday, Poroshenko said that the Alliance proposed to start discussions on the provision of the action plan for NATO membership. He stressed that in the near future Kiev will not make an application, but will continue to carry out reforms to achieve “the necessary standards”.
Press Secretary of the Russian President, Dmitry Peskov, commenting on this information, stated concerns of Moscow about the possible membership of Ukraine in North Atlantic Alliance. According to him, it “may be a further step” to advance the military infrastructure to the borders of Russia.
