Russian doctors will count antibodies to coronavirus

Izvestia: Roszdravnadzor urged to calculate antibodies to COVID-19 according to a unified WHO scale new unified system. This decision is due to the standard of the World Health Organization (WHO). Experts have approved the international units by which to count antibodies to COVID-19, Izvestia reports.

The units in which they called for the calculation of antibodies around the world are called banding antibody units or neutralizing antibody units (abbreviated as BAU/ml). Bringing the test results to a single scale will allow them to be compared, which will make life easier for Russian doctors and patients.

In addition, the department presented a list of six tests that can be officially recounted according to the new WHO scale. Among them are mentioned such systems widespread in Russia as “DiaSorin”, “Roche Diagnostics” and “Abbott”. Standardization will help determine how many antibodies to infection are needed to protect against infection.

“Metaphorically speaking, different organizations measure the amount of antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 in different units – this is how the distance can be measured in pounds, centimeters, yards … And it may well turn out that the value “13” obtained using one test is greater than the value “300” obtained using another system, “- said virologist Georgy Skryabin, a researcher at the Biocatalysis Laboratory of the IBCh RAS.

Rane, the head of the Gamaleya Center, Alexander Gunzburg, named a sufficient number of antibodies to protect against coronavirus. According to him, for full protection against the delta strain, 300 antibodies are required according to the WHO international scale.
