WHO: sanitary measures must be observed to protect against the new COVID-19 strain
The World Health Organization (WHO) recalled the precautions and prevention in connection with the emergence of a new strain of coronavirus B.1.1.529 and emphasized that in order to protect against COVID-19, it is necessary to be vaccinated and comply with sanitary measures. This was stated by the WHO spokesman Christian Lindmeier, TASS reports.

According to him, in order to avoid the spread of a new variant of the coronavirus, it is necessary to reduce its circulation among people. “First of all, we are talking about wearing masks, about avoiding large crowds, about hygiene and ventilation of premises when possible, as well as about other measures,” said Lindmeier.
The WHO representative also stressed the need for widespread vaccination. “The more COVID-19 circulates, the more opportunities for the virus to change, mutate and produce different forms,” he added.
Lindmeier noted that experts from the WHO Technical Advisory Group on the Evolution of Viruses will soon decide whether the strain found in southern Africa should be classified as variants of concern (VOC) or variants of interest (VOI). He pointed out that experts will need several weeks to determine exactly how contagious the B.1.1.529 strain is.
The new strain became known after ten people were reported infected in South Africa, Botswana and Hong Kong on November 24. British scientists have suggested that the new strain will be better at evading antibodies than the delta variant. The many mutations in B.1.1.529 suggest that the virus originated in a patient with a weakened immune system – a patient with HIV or AIDS. It is supposed to be the most dangerous option.
