RAS virologist compared the coronavirus pandemic with the Spanish flu

Corresponding member of RAS Netesov: COVID-19 mortality is 20 times higher than that of the “Spanish woman”

times higher than that of the “Spanish flu”, so the pandemic itself will not subside. Compared the Spanish flu epidemic and the COVID-19 pandemic, a molecular biologist, Doctor of Biological Sciences, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) Sergei Netesov, reports KP.RU.

According to him, many think that a pandemic will end by itself in the same way as the “Spanish flu” allegedly ended. Netesov stressed that the Spanish flu did not go away on its own.

“In Europe, everyone wore masks. The people took care of it for more than two years. The epidemic came to naught also because the death rate from the “Spanish” flu was still not very high, somewhere at the level of a tenth of a percent of the sick. The current coronavirus has a mortality rate of more than two percent, “Netesov said.

He added that the reproductive number, that is, the average number of people to whom a patient can transmit an infection, is 1.2-1.5 in influenza. In the original version of COVID-19, this figure was 2.5. The virologist emphasized that due to the delta strain and the evolution of the virus, this figure is now much higher – about 5-6 must be vaccinated. Then the reproductive number will be about one, the incidence will decline, “the specialist explained.

Earlier, Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana Golikova compared coronavirus with plague and anthrax. According to her, in terms of infectiousness, they are not inferior to COVID-19 – all diseases are attributed to the second group of pathogenicity.
