Abkhazia's only civilian airport to be cleared of mines

Russian sappers began to clear mines at the airport in the capital of Abkhazia Sukhum in Sukhum, the capital of the country. The terminal is being cleared of mines at the request of the Abkhaz authorities. This is reported by Sputnik.

Sappers arrived in Abkhazia from the Russian military base in Khankala in Chechnya. In the republic, they settled in the city of Gudautu. After the preparatory measures, they will start clearing the airport from potentially dangerous ammunition.

The air harbor in Sukhum is the only civilian airport in the country. It was built in the 1960s, connecting the Abkhaz Republic with other cities of the USSR. After the collapse of the Union, a war for independence from Georgia began in Abkhazia, in 1993 the airport was closed, and unexploded mines and other ammunition from those times remained on its territory.

Earlier, the President of the Republic of Abkhazia, Aslan Bzhania, said that the project Estimated documentation for the reconstruction of the airport will be prepared by the fall of 2022. In 2019, the government of Abkhazia made a decision to restore civil air traffic. Local authorities met with representatives of the Federal Air Transport Agency. On May 13, 2021, Bzhania promised to open Sukhum airport in 2024.
