Gender-neutral pronoun added to French dictionary

Le Petit Robert French Dictionary includes gender-neutral pronoun “iel”

Le Petit Robert French Dictionary adds gender-neutral pronoun “iel “. This is reported by The Independеnt.

The new pronoun is a combination of “il” (he) and “elle” (she). At the same time, the word was included in the dictionary back in October, but attention was drawn to it in the media after Francois Jolivet, a deputy from President Emmanuel Macron's party, “En March”, criticized this decision. “Le Petit Robert, the dictionary we thought was a reference, just added the word iel, ielle, iels, ielles to its site. Consequently, its authors are activists in a case that has nothing to do with France: #wokisme, “he wrote on Twitter.

French Education Minister Jean Michel Blanquet also criticized the decision. The politician stated that “inclusive language is not the future of the French language” and that students should not use this pronoun.

In turn, representatives of the dictionary stated that Le Petit Robert does not dictate to the French what terms should be or should not be used, but merely explains the meaning of the word as its use is growing throughout the country.

In 2019, the Merriam-Webster American Dictionary of English introduced the word “they” as a pronoun for people with a non-binary gender identity (those who do not identify themselves as either male or female).
