US Congressmen Cohen and Wilson proposed not recognizing Putin as president after 2024

According to American politicians, the amendments to the Russian Constitution, which were introduced in 2020, contradict both Russian legislation and international obligations. In this regard, congressmen believe, the United States should not recognize any attempts by Putin to remain in the presidency after 2024, at the end of his current term.

Vice-Speaker of the Federation Council of Russia Konstantin Kosachev considered the draft resolution to be interference in the country's internal affairs. He also called the initiative of the congressmen a provocation aimed at disrupting relations between Russia and the United States, which began to normalize. In turn, the head of the ad hoc committee of the Federation Council for the protection of state sovereignty and prevention of interference in the internal affairs of Russia, Andrei Klimov, suggested that the American parliamentarians thus tried to promote themselves before the summit for democracy.
