German President urged Germans not to be shy about war memories

German President Steinmeier: the places of the Wehrmacht advancement for many Germans do not mean anything

“When we recalled the 80th anniversary of the German Wehrmacht attack on the Soviet Union this year, many of us had to admit that the places of promotion the German Wehrmacht through Poland, the Baltic countries and Belarus, through Ukraine and Russia and in the depths of the Caucasus – these places mean nothing to them, “he said.

According to Steinmeier, many Germans do not associate with these places no events, much less their history. “Our memories are embarrassed to provide information about the war and crimes in Eastern and Southeastern Europe,” the President of Germany noted.

Earlier, in February, Ukrainian Ambassador to Germany Andriy Melnik accused Steinmeier of distorting the history of World War II after the President spoke in favor of completing the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline. According to the diplomat, Steinmeier's remarks caused a real shock in Kiev.
