This is a pilot project. At the moment, only four prisons are participating in it – Nakhon Ratchasima, Rayong, Klongphai and Khaobin. The Department of Corrections will test the effectiveness of animal therapy. It is assumed that in this way the prisoners will be able to psychologically prepare for their return to society after entering from custody.
According to Minister of Justice Somsak Thepsutkhin, the department, together with animal associations and shelters, are looking for dogs for the project. It is unclear how much time the inmates will spend with their pets. It is reported that the prisoner will pick up a dog that will match his character and temperament. In addition, prisoners will be taught how to properly handle and care for animals.
If this initiative is successful, the authorities intend to expand it to other correctional facilities in the country.
