The Federation Council assessed Kiev's threats to Belarus due to its position on Crimea

Senator Pushkov: Ukraine will not be able to do anything to Belarus because of its position on Crimea because of the statement by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus Vladimir Makei that “Crimea is now Russian territory.” He wrote about this in his Telegram-account.

“What is so” irreparable “that Ukraine can do to Belarus?” – said the parliamentarian. He said that the Ukrainian authorities can only refuse from the Belarusian electricity to their own detriment, since they are “great masters” in this.

In addition, the member of the Federation Council stressed that Kiev could have reacted to such a position of Minsk earlier , since, according to the head of the Belarusian Foreign Ministry, it has remained the same as it was. “In Kiev, what were you not aware of?” – the senator asked.

Earlier, Kiev warned Minsk about the irreparable consequences of the official recognition of Crimea as part of Russia. “We proceed from the fact that officially, as before, Belarus supports the sovereignty and territorial integrity of our state within its internationally recognized borders,” said Oleg Nikolenko, an official representative of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry. “Changing Belarus’s approach to de jure recognition of the temporarily occupied Crimea as Russian territory will lead to irreparable consequences for Ukrainian-Belarusian relations.”

Crimea became part of Russia in March 2014 after a referendum in which the overwhelming majority of residents voted region supported this decision. Ukraine, the EU countries and the United States refused to recognize the results of the vote, calling the reunification of the peninsula with mainland Russia an annexation. The Russian authorities reject these charges and insist that the accession procedure was in accordance with international law.
