France to build nuclear reactors to save the planet

France to build nuclear reactors to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement

agreements, the fulfillment of which is necessary to save the planet. This was stated by President Emmanuel Macron, Reuters reports.

“We are going to resume the construction of nuclear reactors in our country for the first time in decades and continue the development of renewable energy sources,” Macron said. Such a decision, according to the president, guarantees the achievement of zero carbon dioxide emissions by 2050. Macron noted that the construction of nuclear reactors will help ensure France's energy independence and keep prices for consumers at a reasonable level.

The energy crisis facing Europe has caused a record increase in energy prices. Early in his presidency, Macron pledged to cut the share of nuclear power in France's energy mix from 75 percent to 50 percent by 2035. But record energy prices have forced the government to rethink its stance on nuclear power. However, not all countries agree with this decision: after the nuclear disaster at Fukushima, Germany hastened the process of abandoning reactors.

Greenpeace has already criticized the decision of the French authorities. According to the environmental organization, the plan for the construction of new reactors is “out of touch with reality.” According to environmentalists, nuclear power is outdated and cannot be used in an emergency climate situation. Nevertheless, a number of countries, including Russia, want to include nuclear energy in the new green policy of the European Union. According to supporters of nuclear energy, it does not produce emissions hazardous to nature, which means it can be considered environmentally “clean”.
