MOSCOW, 24 Jul — RIA Novosti. The head of the Duma Committee on international Affairs Leonid Slutsky believes that the EU is not yet ready to revise the policy to existing sanctions, but that “the European Union has swung in the direction of doubt”, I wonder.
On Saturday it became known that Republicans and Democrats from both houses of the us Congress agreed on the text of the bill on U.S. sanctions against Russia and Iran. The document was published on the Congress website and in the coming weeks, will take a vote in the house of representatives (on Tuesday) and the Senate. Then he should go to the President for signature.
On Monday, the Financial Times reported that the head of the European Commission (EC) Jean-Claude Juncker called urgently to discuss the possible response of the European Union in the case of the introduction of new US sanctions against Russia without taking into account the comments of the EU. Prepared for the meeting on Wednesday the EC document, seen by the newspaper, sets out several alternatives, in particular the need to obtain from the President of the United States the assurance that the sanctions will not affect the interests of the EU, or the possibility of invalidation on the territory of European Union sanctions, the United States, in violation of the European interests.
“I do not exclude that the European Commission, these sanctions will not support, but it would be utopian to assume that she starts rapid reverse movement, that is, the revision of the existing sanctions, this Institute of the European Union is not ready for today,” said Slutsky reporters.
The MP noted that the reaction of the European Union on the possible introduction of new sanctions “very interesting” and means that the EU started to question the benefits of this for Europe.
“The European Union has swung in the direction of doubt whether to automatically support tougher sanctions? What is behind this really?” he added.
