Explained the disappearance of the “British Atlantis”

The Dogger Bank

Scientists from the University of York and Imperial College London (UK) called the cause of the disappearance of the “British Atlantis” (Doggerland), plot of land, which in the Mesolithic was located in the southern part of the North sea and connects the British Isles with Eurasia. Preprint of the study is available in edition “Tapes.ru”.

Experts have modeled the impact of landslides, Storegga on the formation of tsunamis in the North sea, which could cause flooding of Doggerland. The calculations showed that the height of the resulting waves made up a nine-metre tsunami could sink no more than 35 percent of the land area (two thousand square kilometers).

Experts believe that these characteristics respond to a major storm, because one tsunami is enough to destroy Doggerland. Most likely its cause the authors believe is not a catastrophic event, a gradual rise in sea level.

On-site Doggerland about 8150 years ago people lived, land notable for its rich flora and fauna. Currently, its place in the North sea is a sandbank known as the Dogger Bank the water depth in this region is about 20-30 meters.
