Human rights activist Lyudmila Alexeyeva said that she visited the President of Russia Vladimir Putin has agreed to pardon former Senator from Bashkiria Igor Izmestyev, who in 2010 was sentenced to life imprisonment on charges of murder and terrorism. It is reported by RIA Novosti.
According to the head of the Moscow Helsinki group, July 20, marking the 90th anniversary, the meeting with Putin, she asked him to pardon izmestiev. “I said, I promise. I said, “I know, Mr President, that when you promise, you are sure to perform. He said, “Yes.” Now tomorrow I will be happy with this news, the mother of Igor izmestiev, because I believe the President will fulfill that promise,” said Alexeyeva during a meeting of the Council for human rights.
In December 2010 izmestiev was sentenced by Moscow city court to life imprisonment. The former Senator was found guilty in the creation of OPG and leading an armed gang, of murder of two and more persons, the organization of the terrorist act, of committing other crimes. In 2011 izmestiev appealed the verdict, but the Supreme court found the decision lawful.
The politician represented Bashkortostan in the Federation Council since 2001. In 2006, he was early withdrawn of the Federation Council for combining political activity with a commercial. After addition of senatorial authority izmestiev went abroad. In January 2007 he was detained in Kyrgyzstan and transported under guard to Moscow.
First, former Senator was accused of tax evasion, and then in the organisation of several murders and attempted murders, terrorism and an attempt to bribe the employee of FSB. The investigators found that the perpetrators of the murders, allegedly organized Izmestieva, were members of Kingisepp criminal group. In the case of former Senator was arrested 12 gang members.
