Gorbachev compared the talks between Putin and trump with his meeting with Reagan

During negotiations with Ronald Reagan on nuclear disarmament, not everyone in the US wanted this dialogue took place, said Mikhail Gorbachev. According to him, the meeting of leaders of Russia and the United States reminds him of this story.

Ex-Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev in interview to the Italian edition of The Globalist said that the meeting between Putin and trump reminded him of beginning disarmament negotiations with the then US President Ronald Reagan.

“A few days after the first personal contacts I was told that American warships entered the Black sea and approached the territorial waters of the USSR,” recalled Gorbachev. Then he decided not to react to manoeuvres of the American ships, considering their provocation. “Was someone at the Pentagon who didn’t want these negotiations,” — said Gorbachev. In the case of a repetition of the situation he gave the order to do warning shots.

Gorbachev also praised the handshake trump and Putin, considering it “the first good sign.”

“From now on you can work on the results that many people today can not imagine,” — said Gorbachev.

Gorbachev and Reagan during meetings in 1985 — 1987 in Geneva, Reykjavik and Washington discussed the issue of nuclear arms reduction. In the end 8 of December 1987 signed the INF Treaty, which under the reduction were missiles with range from 500 to 1000 and from 1000 to 5500 km.

On Friday, July 7, on the sidelines of the G20 summit, their first meeting was held by the President of the United States Donald trump and President Vladimir Putin. During the two-hour negotiations, they agreed to create a channel to track adherence to the Minsk agreements, to enter a truce in the areas of de-escalation in Syria and organizing a working group for the fight against cyberterrorism.
