In early March, the Vice-speaker of the state Duma from “United Russia” Irina Yarovaya has responded to the situation by introducing amendments to the criminal code of the Russian Federation. Her initiative was immediately supported by the President, speaking at a meeting of the Collegium of the Ministry of internal Affairs. Innovation, he said, “will prosecute the owners, creators, and administrators of such sites, to stop their destructive, criminal activity.”
Now the criminal code provides for abetment of suicide imprisonment for a term not exceeding two years, and in the case of minors – up to five years. Now, for incitement to suicide by threats and abuse on the Internet can be obtained from five to eight years, and for the very creation of the corresponding communities in social networks, up to six years in prison. It is important that a criminal liability is imposed regardless of whether the victim committed suicide, the head of the Committee for state construction and legislation Pavel Krasheninnikov (United Russia). And this, according to him, “will provide an opportunity to curb and prevent possible tragic consequences.”

The deputies voted for the amendment unanimously. The idea MPs believe is correct, but some were doubts about enforcement. It is difficult to prove the involvement of certain persons to the organization of such groups, to calculate and arrest.
