In the Federation Council responded to protests by Japan over the deployment of the division in the Kuril Islands

Russia does not intend to use against Japan division, which will be located on the Kuril Islands. On Thursday, February 23, said the Chairman of the Federation Council Committee on defense and security Viktor Ozerov RIA Novosti.

He also noted that Moscow, by contrast, focused on the development of partnership relations with its Eastern neighbor. “We are ready to cooperate, including in the military sphere, in the sphere of combating terrorism and the theft of marine biological resources,” the Senator said. He recalled that at the end of last year held talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe, the results of which was the planned programme for the development of bilateral cooperation.

Also Ozerov expressed the view that the protests of Japan over the deployment of Russian division in the Kuril Islands have no legal grounds. “With the same success you can expect from US that they will withdraw its naval base from Okinawa. Let them do, and then we’ll see about the division in the Kuril Islands”, — he added.

Earlier in the day, the Japanese government sent a protest to Russia in connection with the Ministry of defense plans to place up to the end of the year division in the Kuril Islands. Thus, according to the Secretary General of the Cabinet of Ministers of Yoshihide Sougou, Tokyo “stands for continuation of talks on the issue of these Islands and find a mutually acceptable solution”.

Following the end of world war II between Moscow and Tokyo never signed a peace Treaty. The main obstacle to the signing of the document is the unresolved dispute over the southern Kuril Islands, namely the largest Islands: Iturup, Kunashir, Shikotan and the Habomai group.
