In Moscow regretted Ukraine’s decision to block the presidential statement of the UN security Council in connection with the death of the permanent representative of Russia Vitaly Churkin. About it “Interfax” said Deputy foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov, who oversees issues related to Russia’s participation in the United Nations.
“It’s a pity that some of our partners, primarily Ukrainian colleagues, chairing this month in the Security Council, are unable to transcend their political positions,” he said. According to the diplomat, the death Churkin was welcomed in UN circles with great sadness, and the security Council responded to this special statement for the press.
Deputy foreign Minister also shared that he had to maintain contact with Churkin on a daily basis. “Of course, we are bound not only working relationships, but personal friendships over many of the last years”, — said Gatilov, who from 1999 to 2004, was the first Deputy of Russia’s permanent representative to the UN, and in 2004-2008 he worked as a senior adviser in the office of the Secretary General.
Earlier Tuesday, 21 February, official representative of Russian foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova said about the desire of Ukraine dedicated to Churkin, presidential statements of the security Council. “This entire current Ukrainian government: nothing good can not do, only all mess up, including myself,” she added.
Vitaly Churkin, who held the position of permanent representative of Russia to the UN since 2006, died in new York on 20 February, the day before the 65th anniversary. According to the newspaper The New York Post, he had a cardiac arrest; the hospital Churkin was taken in critical condition.
In connection with the incident, the security Council issued a press statement which said that Council members mourn the Ambassador, who has spent over 40 years in the diplomatic service of Russia, and expressing condolences to his family, the government and the Russian people.
In February the UN Security Council presided over by the Ukraine, which is a non-permanent member of the security Council (each member of the security Council the country is alternately presides in it for one month).
