Barshchevsky: Navalny could not participate in elections overturned

MOSCOW, February 8. /TASS/. Alexei Navalny will not be able to participate in presidential elections in connection with the issued to him on 8 February a conditional sentence on the case of “Kirovles” and a criminal record. About this TASS Plenipotentiary representative of the government of the Russian Federation in the constitutional court Michael Barshchevsky.

“According to the law on election (President) convicted for a serious article (Navalny convicted is considered a serious article 160 of the criminal code of the Russian Federation – approx. TASS) loses the right to run,” said Barshchevsky.

According to the law “On basic guarantees of electoral rights and the right to participate in referendum of citizens of the Russian Federation” have the right to be elected, including the President of the Russian Federation, citizens sentenced to deprivation of liberty for committing grave and (or) particularly grave crimes and having on the day of voting not removed and outstanding previous conviction for the specified crime. Convicted of felony can not participate in elections as candidates within 10 years after repayment of a previous conviction, and sentenced for a particularly serious crime – within 15 years after the cancellation of conviction.

As explained Barshchevsky, thus, Navalny will not be able to qualify for the presidency in the coming years, if the court does not remove his criminal record.
