Putin met Christmas in an ancient monastery near Veliky Novgorod

The President of Russia Vladimir Putin met Christmas in Svyato-Yuriev monastery in Novgorod region. About it reports on Saturday, January 7, RIA Novosti.

Svyato-Yuryev monastery is one of the oldest in Russia. According to legend, the monastery at the source of the Volkhov from lake Ilmen laid in 1030 Prince Yaroslav the Wise. In 1119 by order of Prince Vsevolod Mstislavovich in this place there was the first stone of the Cathedral Church.

After the solemn Liturgy Putin talked with the local fishermen, with whom he had met in September during the visit to Novgorod oblast, along with Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev.

“I am confident that in the coming year will be better than the one that passed,” he said. Putin asked the fishermen catch in the past year, those admitted that he was less than expected, due to the early ice on the lake. They also thanked the President for prompt resolution of the problems complained of in September, told a few fishing stories and shared the recipe for fish soup.

Finally, the fishermen invited Putin to visit the Ilmen. “Now, let’s prepare for spring fishing?” — said the head of state.

Vladimir Putin traditionally spending Christmas in one of the regions. So, in January of 2016, he participated in the Christmas service at the Cathedral of the Holy virgin in the village Turginovo Tver region. In 2015, the head of state visited a festive service in the Church of the Holy virgin in the village of Otradnoe Voronezh region. In the previous two years he came to worship in the Church near Sochi. In 2012, Putin took part in the Liturgy in the Holy Transfiguration Cathedral in St. Petersburg, where he was baptized.
