In the latest edition of “Hurt”, a leading TV channel “Zvezda”, the Explorer Nikolai Petrov talks about how far can a rewriting of history in Ukraine after scandal with Ilya Muromets.
George Orwell “1984” the first time I read in the Soviet Union, on a thin cigarette paper in a pale samizdat copies. Yes, he was then banned in our country, because somehow considered evil in Western slander of the Soviet system. In this novel, as you probably remember, the Ministry of peace dealt with war and the Ministry of truth with lies.
Or rather, a falsification of the past. The rewriting of history. Specially trained people, including the protagonist of the novel, changed or destroyed newspaper articles, magazines, books, statistics, completely changing the story and any events. Up until yesterday. And, frankly, I did not expect to directly encounter something similar in our days.
I mean sensational this week a story about the true origin of Ilya Muromets. According to the Internet edition “Ukrainian news”, some employees of the Ministry of defense of Ukraine, according to the fixed IP addresses of editors, through December 2016 in the article about Ilya Muromets proved the priority version about its origin from a village near Chernigov, and not from the Vladimir region of Russia. All was made about a half dozen edits.
Facts – a cruel thing, and they say that in the mid-nineteenth century, when the Russian intelligentsia suddenly awakened interest in folk life and folklore, the most epic of Kiev heroes-heroes, who served Prince Vladimir of Kiev, was suddenly discovered in the far North – in Arkhangelsk and Olonets provinces. Including on Kizhi island, in a family of storytellers of Riabinini.
There are more than 300 recorded epics. About Nightingale the robber, and about the Filthy Idol, and about the Tugarin Snake. Now the question is: how much preserved through the centuries of heroic epics about the heroes was revealed and recorded in the southern provinces of Russia, including Kiev? Where and were in ancient times, in the service of the Kiev Prince Vladimir the Red Sun heroes Ilya Muromets, Alyosha Popovich and Dobrynya Nikitich? Do you know what the answer is: zero! No!
Centuries of polonisation of the Western Russian lands was not in vain. For over 300 years Kyiv was the Polish, Lithuanian, Swedish, but not Russian and not Ukrainian city. It was enough that the memory of the heroes disappeared from people’s consciousness. But in Novgorod preserved. Along with the epics.
