Russian infectious disease specialist allowed the omicron strain to displace the delta

Infectionist Timakov: the omicron strain can displace the dominant delta variant of COVID-19

is currently a delta option. Such a scenario for the development of a pandemic was made by an infectious disease doctor Yevgeny Timakov on the air of the YouTube channel Soloviev Live.

Timakov noted that the new strain of COVID-19 has not yet been studied, so it is too early to panic.

< p> “If we look at the clinical picture of the course of the disease, we will see that at this stage there is not a single fatal case after this virus,” Timakov said. He also added that the number of hospitalizations of patients with the omicron strain is small.

The infectious disease specialist said that the coronavirus will not destroy itself in the process of mutations, but, on the contrary, will become more infectious. Timakov noted that if the new strain spreads all over the world and displaces the delta, then this can be called a “favorable scenario”, since the omicron strain does not cause a serious course of the disease.

Previously, Chief Researcher of the Gamaleya Research Center Anatoly Altstein said the new omicron strain, COVID-19, found in South Africa, is behaving like a “degenerate”. The strain has an imbalance in the genetic system. This may indicate that it is not capable of causing serious illness.

A new strain of coronavirus under the code B.1.1.529 was detected in South Africa on November 11, and isolated cases were also recorded in European countries. The WHO recognized this option as dangerous and warned that the risk of infection with a new strain in survivors of COVID-19 may be higher.
