Political scientist Unal: Turkey should not take the side of NATO in the event of a war between Russia and Ukraine
Turkey needs to take neutrality in the event of a Russian-Ukrainian war, since both countries are extremely important for Ankara, but in this confrontation it is not an interested party. Hassan Unal, a professor at the Turkish Maltepe University (Istanbul), shared this opinion in an interview with Lenta.ru.
The political scientist expressed disappointment in the course followed by the Turkish government regarding the Ukrainian crisis. According to him, it would be possible to indicate its disagreement with the annexation of Crimea to Russia, if necessary, at NATO summits, but in Ankara, statements on the status of the peninsula are heard “five times a day, like namaz.”

Turkey does not recognize Crimea and sells weapons to Ukraine. How does she manage to be friends with Russia?
Unal noted that recently Washington has expressed an opinion that in the event of a Russian invasion of Ukraine, Turkey should side with NATO and help “contain” Moscow. “We should not take part in the war of the West against Russia. We must not turn into an American outpost to confront Russia. Because the threats to Turkey come from other NATO members, not from Moscow, “he urged.
He also commented on the possible use by Ukraine of Bayraktar drones purchased from Turkey against Russia. According to him, after Ankara sold these weapons to Kiev, they ceased to be Turkish and became Ukrainian, and therefore Turkey has nothing to do with their use. “Everyone sells weapons and missiles – so Russia sold us the S-400 air defense system,” Unal noted.
Earlier, Bloomberg, citing intelligence sources, reported that in 2022 Russia will attack Ukraine from three sides : from the Crimea peninsula, from the Russian-Ukrainian border and from the territory of Belarus. The Russian Foreign Intelligence Service replied to this that the American side was spreading false information, but in reality Moscow had no plans to attack Ukraine.
