He named the timing of the Russian invasion of the territory of Ukraine and stressed that the American colleagues give a similar assessment. According to him, for these purposes, Moscow has concentrated over 92 thousand troops near the Ukrainian borders, and the intervention itself will include airstrikes, artillery and armored attacks, as well as an amphibious assault in the east of the country.
Budanov also noted, that, in preparation for a military operation, Russia is carrying out a “series of psychological operations” aimed at destabilizing Ukraine and undermining its defenses. In particular, he referred to such measures as organizing protest actions aimed at inciting unrest in the republic.
At the same time, the head of the GUR stressed that the United States could restrain any Russian invasion. In his opinion, for this, Washington needs to provide additional military assistance to Kiev and increase diplomatic and economic pressure on Moscow.
Earlier, the press secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov suspected the Ukrainian leadership of intending to make provocations in order to justify the fears of Western countries about the alleged threat of a Russian invasion of Ukraine. He also said that Kiev could take advantage of the “hysteria” whipped up around this to try to resolve the conflict in Donbass by force.
