Military historian assessed the likelihood of a military conflict with Ukraine

Military historian Yulin suggested that the war between the Russian Federation and Ukraine could begin at any time

The war with Ukraine can begin at any moment, as indicated by the growing militant rhetoric and the grouping of troops on the borders of states, said military historian Boris Yulin. In a conversation with “Lenta.ru”, he suggested that almost any event could become a catalyst, especially considering that a small victorious war is partly beneficial for Russia itself.

What they fought for

Yulin is sure that Ukraine and Russia is coming to a logical conclusion to what the warlike rhetoric, the arms race and the “saber-rattling” have been leading all these years. According to him, the two countries are on the very border of a serious military conflict, and how much it grows will depend only on the political lines of its participants.

“The war can start literally at any moment: the troops are not disengaged, neither side is making the slightest effort to resolve the issue peacefully, the Ukrainian official rhetoric is based on the fact that the country will definitely restore its power in Donbass. So the likelihood of an open conflict is really very high. Anything can be the reason here. For example, some British destroyer will appear on the territory of Crimea, which Ukraine considers its own. We will try to detain him – this is a formal pretext for war, “Yulin described one of the options for the development of events.

The situation is even more complicated and dangerous because, as the expert noted, the war will not be limited to the confrontation between the two countries : NATO is already openly declaring its readiness to intervene in the impending conflict.

“If Ukraine starts to lose to Russia, NATO intervention is inevitable. So the situation is now extremely serious. In addition, this confrontation is to a certain extent beneficial for our country: a small victorious war would help divert attention from a number of internal problems, “the military historian concluded.
