Financial Times: EU decides to restrict anti-competitive practices of technology companies digital economy. The decision is reported by the Financial Times.
The new operating rules will affect large technology companies with a market capitalization of at least 80 billion euros (91 billion dollars). Including the new measures will hit the Alphabet divisions of Google, Amazon, Apple, Facebook and Microsoft, as well as the Chinese holding Alibaba Group and the Dutch Booking.
The EU plans to implement the Digital Markets Act (DMA) in 2022 … The project was proposed by the head of EU antitrust law Margrethe Vestager in 2020. The rules aim to limit the monopolies of large tech companies through a list of legal and illegal practices. The US government has expressed concern that the new rules could negatively impact the earnings of US companies.
The law will also give national antitrust authorities the ability to scrutinize major player acquisitions of smaller competitors. The reached agreement on the package of rules will allow EU legislators to vote for it as early as next week. After that, the measures must be agreed with the EU countries before they become legal.
Earlier in 2021, China introduced new restrictions on anti-competitive practices for its technology companies. At the same time, the government in October promised to continue introducing new measures to suppress the monopolistic behavior of tech giants.
