According to Komsomolskaya Pravda, Dmitry's father Nikita Kusnezov was also a scientist and died at the age of 78 in 2005. During World War II, Nikita was taken prisoner by the Nazis when the Wehrmacht troops invaded Ukraine, and was sent to a labor camp in Czechoslovakia. After his release, he fled to the United States, fleeing the Soviet regime.
