Mizulina called punishment for fakes about COVID-19 in Greece as a responsible approach the introduction in Greece of criminal liability for disseminating false information about COVID-19.
“Greece adopted a new law, and in Russia it appeared back in 2020, and measures of responsibility for fakes that carry or may suffer serious consequences for the life, health of citizens, have been tightened. Fake information always covers high-profile topics and emergencies. The global trend is that during the pandemic, the number of fakes has increased significantly. This caused panic among the population. It is impossible to fully predict the consequences of how a person might react to information that he received, especially from friends. It is very important to promptly and toughly suppress the spread of such fakes and take measures to protect citizens so that an environmentally friendly online environment is formed, “she said.
Mizulina stressed that Greece in this situation has shown the country's responsible approach to preserving public order and security in the conditions in which the world finds itself in connection with the pandemic.
Recall that Greece is expanding anti-fake legislation: now the punishment will be provided for false news specifically about the coronavirus. The perpetrators can receive anywhere from three months to five years and financial fines for false news that can cause anxiety or fear among citizens or shake public confidence in the national economy, national defense, or public health.
