Scientists from the USA: the use of marijuana by pregnant women weakens their children's immunity
during pregnancy they used marijuana, increased sensitivity to stress and weaker immunity. Dedicated to the dangerous effects of the drug, an article by scientists published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Science.
Experts from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital and the City University of New York analyzed the gene expression of the placenta for 322 mother-child pairs. The researchers also studied the behavior and physiology of children at the age of six. The hair samples obtained allowed them to measure hormonal levels, and the heart rate during stressful situations was measured using electrocardiograms. The behavior of children was assessed by asking their parents to fill out questionnaires.
It was found that children whose mothers used marijuana during pregnancy experienced more anxiety, were more aggressive and hyperactive. Compared to other children, they had higher levels of the hormone cortisol. They also had a shorter interval between heartbeats – indicating a greater sensitivity to stress. RNA sequencing of placental tissue collected during childbirth showed that use of marijuana by mothers was associated with lower expression in children of genes associated with activation of the immune system, in particular, pro-inflammatory cytokines and type I interferons.
“Study results emphasize the need for unbiased education and awareness-raising among the general public, in particular the vulnerable group of pregnant women, regarding the use of marijuana. Dissemination of reliable information is essential for the health of women and their children, ”said lead author Yasmin Hurd.
