ECHR: the introduction of a lockdown is not a violation of the European Convention on Human Rights

The introduction of a lockdown in the country amid the coronavirus pandemic is not a violation of the European Convention on human rights. This decision was made in the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), reports “Rossiyskaya Gazeta” with reference to the generalization of the Supreme Court of Russia.

The ECHR refused to compare quarantine with imprisonment. “The quarantine was applied to everyone in the state. In addition, a person could leave the house if necessary and was not deprived of social contacts, ”the summary says. According to the position of the court, the degree of restrictions during the quarantine was not strong enough to call the specified epidemiological regime imprisonment.

According to the newspaper, the decision was made five months after the filing of the complaint. The Strasbourg court recognized that the COVID-19 pandemic continues and could have serious consequences for the whole world, therefore the current situation is unpredictable.

Earlier it became known that the number of victims of COVID-19 in the European region for a week increased by five percent , and new cases of infection – by eight. During this period, more than 28 thousand citizens died from complications of infection in European countries. The WHO stressed that Europe has once again become the epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic.
