Igor Izmestyev was elected to the Federation Council as a representative from Bashkiria in 2001, five years later he was deprived of parliamentary powers for combining political and commercial activities. In 2007, he was detained by FSB officers in Kyrgyzstan and convoyed to Moscow, where he was accused of organizing crimes committed in Bashkiria in the 1990s.

In 2010, Izmestyev was sentenced to life imprisonment for creating an organized criminal group ( OPG), leading a gang, organizing the murder of two or more people, as well as a terrorist attack. Now Izmestyev is in the “White Swan” colony of a very strict regime. In 2020, the Supreme Court of Russia refused to overturn the life sentence of Izmestyev.
