Abramchenko: the deterioration of the ecological situation on Lake Baikal was avoided
Deputy Prime Minister Viktoria Abramchenko reported that Lake Baikal was saved from an environmental disaster – pollution from the activities of a nearby pulp and paper mill were eliminated. The statement was made during a meeting of the interdepartmental working group on the organization of environmental work in the region, indicated on the website of the Government.
“The oversludge water in the storage cards has been successfully reduced and purified, which eliminated the risks of destruction of dams of hydraulic structures and volley pollution of Lake Baikal with waste generated during the operation of the BPPM [Baikal Pulp and Paper Mill],” the Deputy Prime Minister said. During the meeting, the Governor of the Irkutsk Region Igor Kobzev added that the measures taken to lower the level of over-sludge water in the storage cards made it possible to avoid overflow of water to the surface.
In addition, the Russian Academy of Sciences has approved the technologies that will be used in the restoration of land and water resources on the territory of the former plant. For example, alkaline wastewater will be purified using filtration and reverse osmosis.
The development of the city of Baikalsk was also discussed at the meeting. The Deputy Prime Minister described the future project of the city's socio-economic development. “It is important not only to remove the industrial waste accumulated for decades, but also to create an environment for the further development of the city. Baikalsk will become the first eco-city where renovation will be carried out taking into account environmental standards, the boiler house will be switched to environmentally friendly fuels, projects for the improvement and improvement of the living environment for citizens have been launched, ”Abramchenko said.
In November, the charitable organization“ My Baikal »Opened the first online waste supermarket in Russia – it sells waste collected on the shores of the lake. In reality, they will not deliver garbage to customers, because beer bottles, cigarette packs and cans will not be useful to anyone. All purchased waste is collected, sorted, partially recycled or disposed of. “The purchase is a voluntary donation to our organization,” said My Baikal.
