Greece demanded the UK to return the masterpieces of the Parthenon

Greek Prime Minister Mitsotakis called on London to return the removed Parthenon statues

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, speaking at the 75th anniversary UNESCO, demanded that Great Britain return the masterpieces of the Parthenon, taken out of the country in the 19th century. The statues are currently in the British Museum in London. His words are quoted by the newspaper “Proto theme”.

The politician explained that there can be no dialogue between nations if it is absent between cultures and there is no mutual respect for history and heritage. “In my opinion, this means that iconic monuments, inextricably linked with the identity of a nation, should belong to this nation. For this reason, I believe that it is necessary that the Parthenon sculptures located in London be reunited with most of the Parthenon sculpture collection in Athens, “he urged.

Mitsotakis stressed that most of the statues are on display in the Museum Acropolis, they are visually connected with the monument, and are also a symbolic thread between modern Greeks and their ancestors.

The Prime Minister added that the Intergovernmental Commission of UNESCO has taken a big step towards promoting the return of cultural property, acknowledged that the matter is intergovernmental in nature, therefore, the responsibility to return the sculptures is entrusted to the British government. He called on the United Kingdom to enter into a good faith dialogue with Greece.

Earlier, on October 26, the Amsterdam Court of Appeal considered the Scythian gold to be Ukrainian property and ordered to transfer it to Kiev. Presiding Judge Paulina Hofmeyer-Rütten explained that Scythian gold is part of Ukraine's heritage after it became independent in 1991, although the relic comes from Crimea.

Since 2014, the collection has been in the Netherlands: in February she was taken out of four Crimean museums for an exhibition in Amsterdam. After Crimea was returned to Russia in March 2014, the Netherlands decided not to transfer the relic to either Crimea or Kiev until a court decision or pre-trial settlement.
