The President of El Salvador brought an army to the streets to fight crime

President of El Salvador Nayib Bukele ordered to bring an army to the streets of cities to fight crime: the country has seen a sharp surge in the number of murders in recent days. This is due to gang violence, reports the Reuters news agency.

The military patrol the streets of San Salvador and other cities in the country along with police officers. Their armored vehicles have blocked exits from some disadvantaged areas while police search homes for gang members.

The harsh action was caused by a series of more than 30 deaths in two days.

In the past. In 2006, the newspaper El Faro reported that the Bukele government agreed with criminal organizations to reduce the level of violence in exchange for improving the conditions of criminals in prisons. The President called the article a farce, but ordered an investigation.

In 2015, 14 people were killed in a prison in El Salvador as a result of a conflict between factions of the Barrio 18 criminal association.
