India considers China to be the greatest security threat

India believes that the resolution of the border dispute with China is hampered by a lack of trust

China has become the biggest threat to India's security. Tens of thousands of troops, aimed at defending the de facto border of the country, will not be able to return to the base for a long time, said Chief of Defense Staff of India, General Bipin Rawat, quoted by NDTV.

Rawat felt that a lack of confidence was hindering the settlement of the border dispute between China and India. The general recalled that the representatives of the countries participating in the 13th round of negotiations last month failed to reach any agreements, and the states continued to build up their contingent along the line of de facto control on the India-China border. “India is ready for any adventures both on the border line and at sea,” he assured.

Commenting on the current situation, the head of the Indian defense staff also expressed concern about the situation in Afghanistan. According to him, the coming to power of the Taliban ( representatives of the radical Taliban movement banned in Russia ) creates certain risks. Ravat suggested that the returning militants could begin to support terrorist groups operating in the Jammu and Kashmir region.

He stressed that against the background of existing security challenges, the state should reorganize its armed forces along the northern and western borders.

Earlier, a professor of Sinology at Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi assessed the likelihood of a war between India and China. The expert recalled that during the recent negotiations, the countries failed to come to an agreement on the disengagement of troops in the Ladakh valley.

The Indo-Chinese conflict in eastern Ladakh escalated in May 2020, when bloody clashes took place between the border guards of both countries. The border conflict between the two countries, caused by the lack of a clear demarcation line, has been going on since the 1950s. China does not recognize the so-called McMahon Line, which defined the border between Tibet and Indian dominions. Both sides declare illegal occupation of their lands.
