At least one million children could die of hunger in Afghanistan. This forecast was announced at a briefing by the representative of the World Health Organization (WHO) Margaret Harris, RIA Novosti reports.

“Malnutrition continues to rise in Afghanistan as a major health challenge. An estimated 3.2 million children under the age of five could be severely malnourished by the end of the year, ”said a WHO spokeswoman. According to her, the organization has already sent funds for the treatment of malnutrition in children to 47 medical institutions in 23 Afghan provinces.
“But this is a drop in the bucket. We are fighting a tough battle against famine that is gripping the country, ”said Harris. She added that “the world should not and cannot afford to turn its back on Afghanistan.”
